Common errors people make when claiming car insurance in Singapore

Having car insurance in Singapore is a vital requirement. Similar in other countries, it protects you from loss in case of an accident. However, people often make some mistakes that deny them the approval of their car insurance claims.

Many car insurance holders in Singapore may be convinced that making the payments is all that matters. The idea they will be compensated in case they get into an accident should be granted, no?

However, claims are not approved that quickly. Below are some issues that may get in the way of your car insurance claim.

Make sure you report an accident within 24 hours

Insurance companies insist that you report an accident as soon as it happens. It would be harder for you to convince the insurance company for compensation if you took your time.

Not reporting the accident early enough will give your insurer the right to deny and reject your claim.  They also require you to get a police report especially if:

  • A government car was involved in the accident
  • A hit and run situation
  • A pedestrian was hit
  • If government property was destroyed

Do not move the car before documenting the accident scene

This requirement is put in place so that insurance firms can assess:

  • The accident
  • Determine its legitimacy
  • Determine if the insured should be compensated.

However, insurance companies usually approve moving the car to the side of the road for safety reasons. In such instances, photographic evidence is important. Take some photos of the accident quickly before moving the car and show them to your insurance agent as soon as possible.

Make sure you capture all the necessary angles to help your insurance company make a proper assessment.

Avoid pushing blame

Sometimes motorists end up blaming the other party for causing the accident, even if it was not the case. In some cases, those who accept the blame initially change their statement later when speaking to their insurance agent.

Proper documentation of the accident scene helps the insurer avoid such cases. Take clear photos and videos using your phone and make sure to get their personal details in case the accident involved other cars or motorists.

Delayed settlement

Failure to follow up on the claim is another common mistake that many motorists make.

Always remember that you have the right to follow up so that you confirm the status of your claim.

Sometimes insurance companies may delay payments as they wait for you to provide a missing document. Which is why it is important to remember to provide your insurance agent with everything they need.

Using unapproved workshops and tow services

An insurance firm will likely deny compensation if you take your car to a garage that is not authorised. It is always advised to read the insurance policy to understand the factors that might end up voiding your cover.

Motorists should always consider calling their insurer to receive any advice on which tow operator is allowed.
